Women’s Economic Empowerment in Rural South Asia: Sustainable Pathways.

Founder Chairman of SIMEC Research Center Engr. Sardar Md. Shaheen participated in the three-day South Asian Women’s Conference 2025, held from May 8–10 at Namgay Heritage Hotel, Thimphu, Bhutan. The conference was held under the theme: “Women’s Economic Empowerment in Rural South Asia: Sustainable Pathways.”

The event was inaugurated by Her Majesty Queen Mother Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck, Founding President of the Tarayana Foundation, adding a significant grace and stature to the proceedings.

On the first day, during a breakout session on the Arc of Rural Tourism, several key insights were shared by the SIMEC team. Engr. Sardar Md. Shaheen spoke on Facilitating Regional Cooperation for Rural Tourism, while Dr. Sariful Islam, Coordinator of SIMEC Research Centre emphasized the Importance of Shared Heritage and Culture in Rural Tourism. Zerin Shabab from SIMEC Research Center contributed with a thought-provoking question: “Is the focus on women in rural tourism viable despite its uniqueness?” In a separate presentation, Dr. Ratan Kumar Roy, Director of SIMEC Research Center explored how to turn rural destinations into digital narratives, highlighting the Bangladeshi context and opportunities.

The conference was attended by over 100 participants, including women leaders from seven South Asian countries, policy-makers, gender experts, and grassroots activists, making it a vital platform for regional dialogue on women’s empowerment and sustainable rural development. SIMEC team also joined in a dinner hosted by Her Majesty Queen Mother of Bhutan.
